How To Fix an E0 or F4 Mini Split Error Code

By | May 20, 2023

When a mini split unit displays an E0 or F4 Error code, it indicates there is an EEPROM error.

The main chip of the indoor or outdoor PCB cannot receive feedback from the EEPROM chip.

This includes Pioneer, Ductless Aire units and more but be sure to check the error codes for your specific unit.

An EO error code on a Mini Split is an Indoor EEPROM Error.

An F4 error code on a Mini Split is an Outdoor EEPROM Error.

There can be a difference in errors depending on a manufacturer and model, so always verify your mini split error code with the manual for the unit.

EEPROM stands for Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory and is a small storage space that contains the code for a mini split to operate.

Much like a hard drive on a PC, the EEPROM is a small computer chip that has code written for instructions on how a mini split should operate.

A mini split has two main computer boards called PCBs, both in the outside unit and inside unit.

The EO code is for the indoor unit while the F4 code is for the outdoor unit.

How To Fix an E0 or F4 Mini Split Error Code

  1. Power off the unit and turn off the breaker or disconnect.
  2. Wait 4-5 minutes and power the unit back on.

If the error code comes back, the indoor or outdoor PCB may need to be replaced.

Wiring can sometimes come loose or have a bad connection. Re-seating all the wires on a PCB board can sometimes clear the error.

Summary
An E0 or F4 Mini Split error codes are similar, with both pointing to an EEPROM error.

An E0 error is the indoor unit, while an F4 code is an outside unit.

Often, resetting both units by removing the power at the breaker and waiting a few minutes before powering them back on will clear the errors.

If the error returns, the wiring should be checked to see if there are any loose or open connections.

In some cases, a PCB board may be bad ad need to be replaced.

The EO error on mine was the communications cable to outside unit (compressor) was labeled wrong. Wires 2 and 3 were reversed on outside unit (compressor). Look at the wiring diagram on inside unit and you’ll see that the black and white wire on the compressor side are reversed. That’s what was wrong with mine.
Also be sure to use the stranded wire cable from disconnect box to the compressor (outside unit).
Your problem could be the eeprom on the inside air handler board ? I’m surprised your getting any air flow though. You may want to check to see if it’s charged enough?

E0 error code was communication cable to outdoor unit labeled wrong. Look at wiring diagram on inside unit. The white and black wire on outside unit needs to be reversed. Be sure to use the black wire for power with the stranded wires to the disconnect box. The load wires may be reversed also.

I installed a mini split and it worked fine at first. Then the homeownwer wanted a breaker installed for it at the unit. So I installed the breaker and tunred on unit and now I am getting code EO. I have checked all the wiring and it is all good and correct. I have cycled off the power to unit for couple minutes then turn back on and still get the same code. I ordered a control board and replaced it as i figured maybe the memory chipped got erased. I am still getting the code EO. The fan works and unit has power but after about 1 to 2 minutes the code comes back. What can I do?

It may have burned a spot in the board. Do you have a spare unit or old take off unit with the same set up?
