How To Fix an EC Error Code on a Mini Split
An EC error code on a mini split indicates a Refrigerant Leakage Detection Error.

This means the system has detected a leak.

While there may be a leak in the unit keep in mind sensors and boards also can malfunction.

Causes of EC Error Code

  • Refrigerant Leak
  • Sensor
  • Bad connection
  • Bad Indoor PCB
  • Bad Outdoor PCB

Several things can cause an EC error with the main problem usually a leak somewhere in the system.

While a leak is the usual problem a bad sensor, connection, or bad PCB can also give the same error.

Steps To Fix a Mini Split EC Error Code

  1. Power Cycle Off and On the Unit
  2. Power the unit off and turn the power off at the breaker for 2-3 minutes.

Turn the power back on, if the error is still there follow the next step.

  3. Check for Refrigerant leak
  4. When looking for a leak see if there is any oil is around a joint or spot.

Leaks can be found a few ways including using soap and water.

Most HVAC techs will have a refrigerant leak detector that beeps loudly next to a leaking spot.

If there is a leak it will need to be fixed and refrigerant added back into the system.

Refrigerant is added by looking up the amount a system uses and adding it in by weight using a scale.

  5. Bad Sensor or Loose Connection
  6. If the sensor that detects refrigerant goes bad it will give an EC error.

A loose connection can also give the same result.

  7. Bad Indoor or Outdoor Main PCB
  8. A bad PCB board can also give this error.

Check all other options before replacing a PCB board.
